What they're saying about 2011 Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw

Via Dodgers press release -

Dodger Owner and Chairman Frank McCourt: “Clayton’s hard work and determination this year was apparent more and more with each start, culminating in one of the greatest seasons on the mound in the Dodgers’ long and storied history. This young man is just beginning to tap his potential. As good as he is on the mound and with his teammates, his generosity within the community and his commitment to his charitable works is as stellar and noteworthy.”

Dodger Special Advisor to the Chairman and 1956 Dodger Cy Young Award Winner Don Newcombe: “As the winner of the first Cy Young Award, I am so very proud of Clayton Kershaw and his outstanding performances that led to his receiving the 2011 Cy Young Award. I am reminded of Sandy Koufax whenever I see Clayton pitch and feel that there is a deep comparison between the two. Clayton has an outstanding work ethic, as did Sandy, which will show itself through Clayton's baseball career.”

Dodger Special Advisor to the Chairman Tommy Lasorda: “Clayton Kershaw is very deserving of this award. He is one of the fiercest competitors I have seen and plays the game the way it is supposed to be played. He has improved each year, and last season he did it all. Congratulations, as it is well deserved."

Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti: “This is a tremendous honor, perfectly fitting someone who this season became one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball. We have witnessed a young person learn, compete and develop a rare talent leading to his winning of baseball's most prestigious pitching award.”

Dodger Manager Don Mattingly: “Clayton represents everything good about this game and this award. He is a tremendous worker, a student of baseball and a great teammate. He’s always trying to get better and deserves all the accolades that come his way.”

Former Dodger Manager Joe Torre: “The only thing winning the Cy Young does for Clayton is that he'll expect more of himself in 2012. He’s a very special young man!”

Dodger Pitching Coach Rick Honeycutt: “I'm extremely happy for Clayton and his family. He definitely deserved the Cy Young, and being just the 16th pitcher to be the triple crown winner makes it even more special. Clayton has always separated himself at every level with his hard work, preparation, and determination to be the best he can be. He is a model for all of our pitchers in our organization to follow. I hope this is the 1st of many Cy Young awards for him.”

2003 Dodger Cy Young Award Winner Eric Gagné: “I’m really happy for Kersh. He’s a great guy and it’s such an honor to win a Cy Young Award, especially with this organization and all the true legends that have won before us. It’s a really cool feeling and amazing for him, but he’s just getting started. He’ll probably win a couple more of these.”

1988 Dodger Cy Young Award Winner Orel Hershiser: “I am first and foremost a big fan of Clayton and have been honored to watch his quest in moving from good to great. He’s just scratching the surface of what he can become and I know he can reach much higher limits. Congratulations Clayton, it’s an amazing honor.

1981 Dodger Cy Young Award Winner Fernando Valenzuela: “As a pitcher, he improved a lot this past season and he’s very focused on the game. Clayton’s a competitor. He likes to win and always wants to win. He’s here to do his job and that’s what I like about his style. Winning this award, it’s the biggest honor for a pitcher and it means a lot. After putting all the work into it, he earned it.”

1974 Dodger Cy Young Award Winner Mike Marshall: “He understands it’s a game of pitching, not power. I haven’t had a chance to see many of his games, but from what I’ve seen, I like his pitch sequences. He challenges himself, not the hitters. It’s a matter of keeping the game under control. It’s not easy to throw a non-fastball on a 2-and-0 or full count. He does a nice job of keeping the hitters uncomfortable.”

1962 Dodger Cy Young Award Winner Don Drysdale’s wife, Anne Meyers Drysdale: “Congratulations to Clayton Kershaw for reaching this plateau. It’s certainly an honor and look at all the Dodgers who have won the Cy Young Award! I’m sure Don would’ve been very proud.
