Angels to monitor Garrett Richards' innings, pitch counts closely

NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. – As Mike Scioscia answered questions during his winter meetings media session Wednesday about why he thinks the Angels will be better next year, his foremost reason had nothing to do with any moves being pondered up in Billy Eppler’s suite.

Scioscia cut right to Garrett Richards, who is back as the “lead dog,” he said.

The only question is how hard they’ll push him.

Richards is coming back from relatively unproven stem-cell therapy to treat a damaged ulnar collateral ligament. He has so far avoided Tommy John surgery, but he’s going to require special care.
