Angels Rumors: Los Angeles acquires 2B Johnny Giavotella in trade with Royals

The Los Angeles Angels acquired 26-year-old second baseman Johnny Giavotella from the Kansas City Royals on Friday, hoping that his minor-league success will begin to translate at the major-league level.

Per Aaron Gleeman of NBC's Hardball Talk, Los Angeles will send right-handed pitcher Brian Broderick to Kansas City, after signing Broderick to a minor-league deal last month.

Here's Gleeman's scouting report on the Angels' new second baseman, Johnny Giavotella:

Giavotella has struggled so far in the majors, but that amounts to fewer than 500 total plate appearances and he’s a career .315 hitter with as many walks as strikeouts in four seasons at Triple-A. He should get a look as Howie Kendrick‘s replacement at second base.

Whether or not Giavotella is the future at second base or just another piece of organizational depth, expect him to get every chance to prove himself as Kendrick's heir to the second base position for the Angels.
