Michael Appleton quits as Oxford United manager to join Leicester City as Craig Shakespeare's assistant

Michael Appleton has left his role as Oxford United manager to become Craig Shakespeare's No 2 at Leicester.

Shakespeare worked with Appleton at West Bromwich Albion for five years and rates the 41-year-old highly.

Appleton has impressed in three years at Oxford, winning promotion from League Two and reaching the Football League Trophy final, as well as claiming a number of higher level cup scalps.

But the former Blackburn, Blackpool and Portsmouth boss could not resist a return to the Premier League.
