Women’s basketball: Kent State outlasts rival Akron 73-69

KENT: Of Larissa Lurken’s 19 missed shots in Kent State’s 73-69 win over rival Akron on Saturday, her final misfire was nearly the costliest.

The senior guard, who led all scorers with 28 points, failed to make a jump shot with 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Zips senior guard Alex Ricketts grabbed the rebound and UA coach Jodi Kest called timeout facing a three-point deficit.

Lurken didn’t let her miss bother her. As Zips sophomore guard Morgan Sefcik prepared to shoot a potentially game-tying 3-pointer, Lurken came off her defensive assignment to guard Sefcik, whose shot fell far short of the rim with 17 seconds to play.
