Local sports briefs for Sept. 24, 2016: ESU football wins in double overtime

ESU UPENDS NO. 13 UCM IN DOUBLE OT: It took two overtime periods, but Emporia State got its upset.

The Hornets defeated No. 13 Central Missouri 37-31 in double overtime Saturday in Warrensburg, Mo. ESU defensive back MJ Mathis’ interception held UCM scoreless in the second overtime, and Hornets quarterback Braxton Marstall found Mitchell Foote for a game-winning 20-yard touchdown strike on the ensuing drive.

Marstall finished the game 27 for 39 for 233 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Antonio Brown led the Hornets’ ground game with 99 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
