Lousy third-down defense in New England helped end Chiefs' season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs were on the verge of getting the high-scoring New England Patriots' offense off the field on the first possession of last month’s divisional round playoff game.

The Chiefs had the Patriots right where they wanted them, in third-and-long. In this case, it was third-and-13 from the Kansas City 43-yard line. The Chiefs rushed five players, and Tamba Hali and Dee Ford each got initial pressure on the edges as Tom Brady dropped back to pass.

But the other three rushers didn’t get any push up the middle, and Brady was able to step up and pass into zone coverage to Rob Gronkowski.
