NFL Insider: Did Texans GM deserve new four-year deal?

No one can accuse Houston Texans owner Bob McNair of not being patient with his employees.

McNair extended general manager Rick Smith’s contract Friday afternoon for four years, through the 2020 season.

This is good news for the rest of the AFC South.

The move is puzzling.

The Texans are 79-81 in Smith’s 10 years as GM with a 2-3 playoff record. They did win the division last season at 9-7, but all of those good vibes were destroyed by a 30-0 home loss to Kansas City in the wild-card round.

Smith has made some excellent choices.
