The Silver Lining In J.J. Watt's Back Surgery

J.J. Watt will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. His absence will force Houston's coaching staff to give additional emphasis to the defensive end position as they make evaluations during the preseason.

Three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt had surgery to repair a herniated disc, which means Watt will open training camp on the physically unable to perform list (PUP). We can all speculate on the timetables for recovery, but Watt is the only one who truly knows. Based on the history of recovery from such an injury, he is projected to miss as much as 8-10 weeks, which includes the entire preseason and possibly a regular season game or four on top of that, depending on how his body heals.
