Astros send L.J. Hoes to Baltimore for cash

Outfielder L.J. Hoes was traded to the Orioles for cash on Wednesday, landing with an organization he’s familiar with. The Astros designated him for assignment on Friday to make room on the 40-man roster to protect players from the upcoming Rule 5 draft.

Hoes is from the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area, and the only other team he’s played for in the majors is the Orioles. They drafted him in the third round in 2008.

“There were a couple clubs interested in L.J.,” general manager Jeff Luhnow said. “He’s very familiar, comfortable in Baltimore, and to be honest, felt like that was for him a good spot because he’s going to have an opportunity.
