Astros News: Houston Watches Barry Zito Work Out, Long Shot That Astros Sign Him?

The Houston Astros are just like any other Major League Baseball team at this juncture right before spring training, looking for diamonds in the rough amongst the available crop of free agents before camp fully convenes.

According to several reports, the Astros' search for pitching depth led them to watch former Cy  Young winner Barry Zito's workout session in Houston on Tuesday. However, it doesn't appear that the two sides will likely be a match for one another.

Per Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle:

Although the Astros want to add to their starting pitching depth, it’s a long shot the Astros would sign Zito, a former Cy Young winner who is trying to make a comeback, per one of the people familiar with the situation. He has other interested teams, however.

Zito, 36, did not pitch in 2014. In 2013, he went 5-11 with a troubling 5.74 ERA in 30 (25 starts) for the San Francisco Giants.
