“I had no idea what club soccer was; I just knew [recreational] and pee-wee [leagues],” Thompson said. “I was horrible; I had no business being on the field with the other girls. A week later, the coach called and offered me a spot on the team. He told my mom, and this is seriously word for word, ‘She’s not very good at soccer, but she’s fast so we can work with it.’ ”
While Thompson may not have known what club soccer was, she did know she wanted to play collegiately, and with a strong work ethic that far outpaced her abilities (at the time), she was determined to achieve that goal.
