Golden State Warriors Rumors: Why signing Lamar Odom would be a mistake

Lamar Odom is one of the biggest names among the remaining NBA free agents, but there’s a very good reason why he’s still on the market. The Warriors are rumored to be among the teams interested in signing Odom, but we’re extremely confident there’s zero truth behind these rumors.

Odom’s production has plummeted over the last two seasons, and the reputation he cultivated as the Lakers’ versatile sixth man is the only thing still keeping him in the league.

Odom has been predominantly abysmal over the past two seasons. He quit on the Dallas Mavericks in 2011-12, and despite claiming he was all in during his time with the Clippers last season, his stats barely improved. Odom has seemed more interested in his career as a reality television star than he has in his career as a professional athlete.

The Kardashian sideshow that follows in Odom’s wake would have no place in the culture Mark Jackson is trying to build. There’s no room for the drama and distractions of reality TV on a championship-winning basketball team, and the only way to avoid the drama is to avoid Odom completely.

Even without the Kardashian factor, it’s hard to see what Odom could offer the Warriors. His offensive production is minimal and his rebounding and defense aren’t good enough to compensate.

Odom was atrocious in the Clippers’ first-round playoff loss to the Grizzlies last season, and he’s a notoriously uneven postseason performer. There’s no point in adding a player who won’t bring anything to the table come playoff time, and if all the Warriors want is a tall guy who can provide six fouls a game, they should find someone without Odom’s baggage.
