Tech drops $47 building request after rebukes on students’ due process

A week after state lawmakers reprimanded Georgia Tech for its due-process practices in punishing students accused of sexual assault and other violations, the university has withdrawn its request for a $47.4 million library complex renovation.

The withdrawal seems to have been prompted by a request from the governor’s office.

In a letter to state budget leaders this week, Gov. Nathan Deal’s chief of staff asks to have the $47.4 million deferred to give Tech more time to raise private funds to offset state costs for the project. The letter from Chris Riley includes the Tech deferment along with several other changes to Deal’s budget proposal.
