Statistically speaking: Georgia defense sees slight drop-off in 2016

ATHENS, Ga. — All things considered, Georgia’s defense has been solid this season. At the same time, the numbers show the Bulldogs haven’t been as good as they were a year ago.

In Georgia’s first season under coach Kirby Smart and defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, the Bulldogs had mostly marginal drop-offs in total defense, passing defense and scoring defense, but improved in rushing defense, takeaways and sacks.

The struggles came in the red zone, where the Bulldogs plummeted from third nationally to 127th — one spot from the bottom — in just one season.

In total defense, this season’s Bulldogs are allowing 328.
