GAINESVILLE — After the Florida Gators named their football field in honor of the iconic Steve Spurrier during the offseason, I asked Jim McElwain if perhaps he dreamed of someday having his name immortally etched on something significant at UF.
McElwain just chuckled and replied: "I just hope to have my name on a little fishing boat someday."
This self-deprecation is typical of McElwain, who like every other football coach at UF has had to live in the shadow of Spurrier — the oracle of offense; the Gator grandmaster; the greatest coach and one of the greatest players in University of Florida history.
