Genk 1-1 Everton: Wayne Rooney hits form as Ronald Koeman's men impress in final test before Ruzomberok tie

There was a high-five from his manager, while there was a standing ovation from the away section, who sang his name in appreciation.

But there was another goal and that is what will have mattered most to Wayne Rooney, as his return to Everton continues to gather momentum; he played 73 minutes of a 1-1 draw with Genk in Belgium and left the impression he will be a key figure for Ronald Koeman in the next 12 months.

Of course this is pre-season and making predictions so early is fraught with danger but there was much that was positive about this performance, from the way he passed, moved and provided leadership to this group.
