DETROIT -- Justin Verlander did on Monday what he has done for the majority of his 11-year MLB career - give the Detroit Tigers a chance to win.
With trade rumors involving his name swirling, Verlander showed glimpses of his vintage self, featuring a mid-90s fastball and tight slider in seven innings of work, striking out nine.
He left after seven innings with the game tied 3-3, but the Royals went on to win 5-3, scoring two runs in the top of the 12 inning on back-to-back from runs from Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas against recently recalled Drew VerHagen.
