Was Nick Castellanos out? Controversial play in 9th inning helps Detroit Tigers slip past White Sox

DETROIT -- Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura wanted to challenge the safe call at second base in the ninth inning.

But it was too late.

Following Detroit's 2-1 walk-off win Friday, Ventura said he attempted to challenge the controversial tag at second base on third baseman Nick Castellanos during his second trip out of the dugout. But the fourth-year manager was informed the time to challenge had passed and the play was no longer reviewable.

The play in question occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning when Castellanos turned on the first pitch he saw from White Sox reliever Zach Duke and laced it to right field.
