Tigers scratch Ryan, start Wilson against Athletics (The Associated Press)

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Right-hander Alex Wilson is scheduled to make his first career start for the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday after Kyle Ryan was scratched.

Wilson, a right-hander who has worked strictly out of the bullpen in 56 games over two-plus seasons with the Tigers and Red Sox, has never gone longer than 3 2-3 innings. The 28-year-old has a 2.29 ERA in 12 appearances this season.

Detroit manager Brad Ausmus had penciled in Ryan - who was pitching in the minors - to start after Alfredo Simon was placed on the bereavement list following Tuesday night's game against Oakland.
