Abdelkader is NHL's first star of the week

DETROIT – For the first time in his career, the NHL has recognized Justin Abdelkader for his scoring touch.

On Monday, the league named the Red Wings’ top-line forward the First Star of the Week for his five-point effort that helped the Red Wings to consecutives wins to begin the 2015-16 season.

The former Michigan State standout scored four goals on five shots on goal, and added an assist as the Red Wings defeated Toronto, 4-0, and Carolina, 4-3.

Last Friday, Abdelkader registered the second career three-goal game as the Wings rolled to a 4-0 season-opening victory over Toronto.
