Pistons News: Will Stan Van Gundy try to trade Josh Smith or Brandon Jennings?

The Detroit Pistons have scuffled so far to start the 2014-15 NBA season, dealing with both cold shooting and a lack of cohesion at times for some of the team's major parts.

With that in mind, MLive.com's David Mayo pondered in a recent mailbag over whether or not new head coach/president Stan Van Gundy will look to shake up the roster with some trades:

If the Pistons try to make a trade, the biggest contracts make the most sense. But cutting a deal for Josh Smith's big contract remains a challenge. Brandon Jennings makes an average of slightly more than $8 million this year and next year but is playing up to that contract early in the Van Gundy era. Meeks is next but he is Van Gundy's guy. Monroe can veto any trade.

From a contract perspective, what the Pistons have is a number of nice throw-in pieces to make bigger trades work, without the big pieces to package them with, or even the financial urgency to worry about such packaging because they are some $10 million under the salary cap already.

With the Detroit Pistons still having the upper hand when it comes to offering Greg Monroe top dollar on the open market in 2015, names like Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings make a little bit more sense in potential trade scenarios if the Pistons can't right the ship as the new year rolls around.
