Claudio Ranieri’s fairy-tale run with Leicester City comes to an abrupt end

Imagine, if you will, the Chicago Cubs firing Joe Maddon 10 months after winning their first World Series title in 108 years. Picture the Cleveland Cavaliers dumping Tyronn Lue not a year since celebrating the city’s first major championship in more than a half-century.

Now consider what happened in England this past week when Leicester City sacked Claudio Ranieri, architect of a 5,000-to-1 Premier League fairy tale last spring.

“Yesterday,” the charming Italian said Thursday, “my dream died.”

Along with it, thousands of hearts broke, in not only the East Midlands, but across the sports frontier.
