Mavs embracing opportunity to spread basketball beyond the borders with game in Mexico City

MEXICO CITY -- When the Mavericks last came south of the border, it was 2003, Eduardo Najera was an ambassador for a preseason game in his native country and then-NBA Commissioner David Stern said a team would be based in Mexico "within 10 years."

That was way longer than 10 years ago.

This is not to besmirch Stern's forward-thinking, global view of the NBA. It's just that moving an NBA team to Mexico has taken a back seat to making sure the 29 teams based in the U.S. and the one in Toronto are all healthy.

Expansion is not on the table.
