Dennis Smith Jr. wore jersey number 4 at Trinity Christian School in Fayetteville, N.C., as well as during his only season at North Carolina State.
So, obviously, he hoped to wear No. 4 as a Dallas Maverick. Yet when he posed for photos after his introductory news conference Friday in Dallas, he held up jersey No. 1. How he wound up with that number is somewhat complicated. Let's just say it wasn't his first or second or even third choice.
