The Dallas Cowboys have released DT Jay Ratliff, according to widespread reports. Ratliff, a four-time Pro Bowler, hadn't played since last November, and team sources indicate that a failed physical is behind the player's release. Ratliff was eligible to return from the reserve/physically unable to perform list this week, but his chance to play for the first time since last November has evaporated with the failed physical.
Ratliff released a brief statement following his release.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Cowboys and it was always my desire to begin and end my career here in Dallas,” Ratliff said. “But I understand this business and now it’s time to move on, turn the page and begin again.”
The Cowboys selected Ratliff in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL draft. In his eight seasons with the team, he compiled 158 tackles and 27 sacks. His best year was without a doubt 2008, when he had 7.5 sacks and 33 tackles as the Cowboys finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs.
Ratliff was arrested on January 22nd, 2013 on suspicion of drunk driving. Ratliff was arrested after sideswiping a truck early in the morning - he failed a field sobriety test and spent the rest of the night in jail before being released on bond the next morning.
Ratliff recorded just two sacks after signing a five-year, $40 million contract extension that would have ended in 2017. The release saves Dallas $625,000 in 2013, but the Cowboys will still owe $6.9 million next season.
