Cowboys Rumors: Deal with free agent LB Will Herring is off

In a strange bit from the Cowboys rumors file this afternoon, the deal struck between former New Orleans Saints linebacker Will Herring and the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday is now kaput.

According to Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk (by way of Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram), "the two sides mutually agreed to walk away from the deal. Unlike Rodger Saffold with the Oakland Raiders and O’Brien Schofield with the New York Giants, the reason isn’t due to a failed physical."

The Dallas Cowboys had signed Herring to a 1-year /$1,020,000 deal on Thursday, but for reasons as of yet unexplained, both sides decided not to go forward with said agreement.

Will Herring acted as the special teams captain for the New Orleans Saints in 2014, appearing in all 16 of the Saints' regular season games. Aside from his special teams work, Herring was used sparingly as an outside linebacker--posting 12 tackles and even intercepting a pass.

The seven-year pro spent the first four years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks before spending the last three in New Orleans. His quick departure from the Dallas Cowboys puts him back on the open market--in plenty of time to find a team with both a need for a special teams specialist and with cap space.
