Cowboys News: Jason Garrett Speaks Out On Michael Sam Signing, "About Football"

In this Cowboys news and rumors update, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is aware of the historical significance attached to signing Michael Sam - the NFL's first openly gay player - to the team's practice squad in advance of the 2014 NFL season. However, Garrett is more concerned about what Sam can bring to the team's depth than any cultural ramifications.

"This is about football. We evaluated him as a football player and felt like he could help us as a football player. We want to see what he can do. Our attention and focus is on football. It’s on getting ready for the 49ers. That’s the culture that we have around here, that’s the culture that we continue to have,” Garrett said, via Michael David Smith of NBC's Pro Football Talk.

Garrett made it clear that defensive end remains an area in need of improvement heading into this season, and that Sam will have a chance to prove his mettle at the position on the practice squad. Furthermore, the Cowboys head coach believes that the Cowboys' recent trade for Titans defensive lineman Lavar Edwards has more to do with the team's here-and-now philosophy than Sam.

“We’ve got to be careful about spending too much time on a practice roster player. We traded for a defensive end who’s going to be on our active roster, from Tennessee," Garrett stated.

"We picked up a defensive lineman who we think is going to be on our active roster. So we tried to address the situation."
