Jon Gray “turning it loose” pitching without a boot and his return to Rockies is nearing

Not hindered by a once-broken foot or a packed rotation of pitchers excelling in his absence, Rockies right-hander Jon Gray on Sunday pitched a bullpen session at Coors Field to show off his arm. His return, the Rockies hope, is right around the corner.

“He was turning it loose,” Colorado manager Bud Black said. “His arm is in good shape.”

Gray threw about 35 pitches and, for the first time since breaking his left foot in an April 12 game at San Francisco, he did it without a protective boot.

His next step, Black said, is to strengthen his legs enough to participate in fielding practice.
