For Rockies' Tony Wolters, transition to catcher came naturally

PITTSBURGH — Tony Wolters remembers the day with clarity.

He was a wannabe minor-league infielder for the Cleveland Indians during 2013 spring training in Goodyear, Ariz., when manager Terry Francona approached him with a career-changing proposition.

"He told me, 'I see a catcher in you.' Then he told me he'd give me a day to think about it," Wolters recalled Sunday before the Rockies-Pirates game was postponed because of rain.

So Wolters mulled it over, suffering through a restless night with little sleep.

"I was nervous and I had a lot of mixed emotions," Wolters said.
