Avalanche to use San Antonio as top minor league team (The Associated Press)

DENVER (AP) -- The Colorado Avalanche will use San Antonio as their top minor league team beginning next season.

General manager Joe Sakic announced Friday that Colorado's American Hockey League affiliate will switch from the Lake Erie Monsters in Cleveland to the San Antonio Rampage. The Monsters have been Colorado's AHL partner since 2007-08.

The agreement is for the next five seasons, the team said.

San Antonio is owned and operated by Spurs Sports & Entertainment, which also runs the San Antonio Spurs of the NBA. The Rampage wrapped up the AHL's West Division this season and is in the Calder Cup playoffs.
