Indians notebook: centerfielder Michael Bourn hits ninth in the lineup for first time in career; catcher Yan Gomes progressing well

DETROIT: Struggling Indians centerfielder Michael Bourn was placed into the No. 9 spot in the lineup for the first time in his career for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Tigers.

Bourn, normally a leadoff hitter, was hitting just .180 entering Sunday’s game. He hadn’t hit anywhere but leadoff since June 28, 2011 with the Houston Astros, when he hit second in the order. He went 0-for-4 with an RBI (on a fielder’s choice) in Sunday’s 8-6 loss.

“Sometimes you just catch yourself in a funk,” Bourn said before the game. “That’s what I’m in right now.
