Indians catcher Yan Gomes on track to return to team Sunday

Gomes has been rehabbing from a sprained right knee he sustained against Detroit on April 11. The early timetable for his return was 6-to-8 weeks. If he does catch Sunday in Cleveland, it would be six weeks plus one day since his injury.

Gomes caught seven innings and simulated two more Wednesday night for Triple-A Columbus before acting as the designated hitter Thursday. Friday night, the plan was for Gomes to catch nine innings. If he feels good the next morning, he will come to Cleveland Saturday and be re-activated from the disabled list Sunday.

“Everything needs to be OK with him but he’s kind of flown through everything,” Indians manager Terry Francona said.
