The Cincinnati Reds officially claimed former RHY Keyvius Sampson off of waivers on Thursday, per a report by C. Trent Rosencrans of Cincinnati.com.
According to Rosencrans, "multiple teams put in claims on the 24-year-old right-hander, said Reds general manager Walt Jocketty, and his team was the one to get him. The Reds were awarded the waiver claim on Sampson on Thursday and placed him on the team's 40-man roster."
The Padres waived Sampson to make room for Shawn Kelley after the trade with the Yankees, telling him that they would have preferred to keep him but didn't expect him to clear waivers.
He didn't, and the Padres' loss now becomes the Reds' gain.

"It's a low-risk, high-reward type deal for us," Reds GM Walt Jocketty said. "I know several other clubs claimed him, but we were ahead of them and got the claim."
Listed as the Padres' #9 prospect before the 2014 season by Baseball America, Sampson struggled to a 6.88 ERA in 38 appearances (14 starts) for San Diego's Triple-A affiliate in 2014.
However, he still has tremendous upside that the Reds hope presents itself this coming year.
