At 24 years old, Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez had already accomplished more than many do in an entire lifetime. Early Sunday morning that life was cut short when news broke that Fernandez had passed away after a boat accident off the shores of Miami Beach.
Fernandez attempted defection from Cuba multiple times, being jailed and expelled from school after being caught the third time before finally accomplishing his goal on the fourth try. He was 14 on that final boat ride to Florida. During that trip he saw a fellow passenger fall in the water and without a second thought he jumped in to save her life.
