The Video Room: Learning from the Blackhawks’ offensive mentality

As the video coach of a college hockey program, I am often asked about how high-level coaches watch the game differently than fans. The biggest difference is while fans look for highlights, coaches search for habits. It’s not the exciting, one-in-a-million scoring play that makes me take notice, but rather the repeatable details of the game which add to up to tilt the ice in one’s favor over the course of a season.

From a technical point of view, the most impressive aspect about the Chicago Blackhawks is how the team has been able to build up and maintain a distinctive style since Joel Quenneville took over behind the bench in 2008.
