Williams tops thin crop of tight ends

The following is the fourth of 10 position previews in advance of the April 30-May 2 NFL Draft.

Most draft analysts agree that the tight end position is mediocre at best in this year’s draft with no slam-dunk first-round picks in the class.

The consensus top tight end is Minnesota’s Maxx Williams, a finalist for the Mackey Award last season as a third-year sophomore when he caught 36 passes for 569 yards and eight touchdowns.

His father, Brian Williams, played center for 11 seasons with the New York Giants from 1989-99, while his grandfather, Robert Williams, was drafted by the Bears in 1959 but never played pro football.
