One of the most surprising coaching changes this winter was the firing of Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith.

Smith was beloved by his players and too the Chicago franchise to the playoffs in three of his nine seasons with the club.

In the wake of the coaching search, one name seems to stand out above the rest, Mike Singletary.

Singletary is a legendary Bears LB and a much liked coach with a strong personality. But what makes him different than the other candidates the Bears are perusing is that he is a defensive minded coach.

The Bears are arguably one of the best defenses in the league and do not need the help of a defensive minded coach. What the Bears really need is someone who can come in and help make Jay Cutler click with his receivers and help rejuvenate the running game. This is not something the Singletary will bring to the Bears, so the connection between him and the Bears does not really seem to make much sense.

If the Bears do interview with Singletary, it would most likely be as a common courtesy to one of the greatest Bears of all time. But in reality he does not match the profile of what the Bears need and should not be considered a serious candidate.
