Welcome to Toronto, Auston Matthews.
Leafs Nation has been waiting for you.
The Maple Leafs won the NHL draft lottery on Saturday night, earning the right to select No. 1 overall on June 24 in Buffalo.
The Leafs, who finished 30th overall during the regular season, had a 20% chance of winning the lottery.
Though there has been a late charge from Patrik Laine of Finland, the expectation is the Leafs will select Matthews at No. 1. The Leafs desperately need a first-line centre and Matthews, at 6-foot-2 and 194 pounds, would slide into that role and make an impact immediately.
