Real work begins for Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff

It was a quaint little message when they weren’t making the playoffs, a we-know-what-we’re-doing plea for patience.

And while it may have been sincere, it came off as a tad patronizing.

The Winnipeg Jets, we were told as the years without a playoff berth went by, weren’t just trying to get in one season — they wanted to build a team that gets in season after season.

With four drafts, a flurry of recent trades and the 2014-15 playoff appearance in the rear view, brief as it was, are they there?

“That is our mandate,” GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said as part of Friday’s post mortem.
