20 years ago: Y.’s season of misery finally ends

The 1996-97 BYU basketball team — the little soap opera that brought you a firing, a felony, freshmen, futility, football players and freak injuries — walked off the court for the last time after yet another defeat, this time to UTEP 81-76 and marked the 25th anniversary of the Marriott Center with the season's 25th loss.

How rare is 1-25? Utah's four major universities — BYU, Utah, Weber State and Utah State — had been playing basketball for a combined total of 309 years, and none of them had a season like this, unless you count USU's 0-8 and 1-8 performances from 1907 to 1909.
