When I ran track in high school, I loved relays. Decades later, it was gratifying to be chosen for a different kind of relay.

I was among 2,000 torchbearers participating in the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay, covering 3,200 miles, all 92 counties and finishing up in downtown Indianapolis.

Comically, some of those nominating me thought it was for the Olympic torch relay. (I have reported on seven Olympic Games for IndyStar.) No matter. This was not something to turn down.

Fittingly, my relay leg Saturday morning – lasting a three-block walk – began at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
