Red Sox notes: New fifth starter needed now; David Price set for next start

To make room for new call-up Sam Travis, the Red Sox have sent fifth starter Hector Velazquez back to Triple-A.

In other words, they need a new starting pitcher. Again.

“Without any injury, anything unforeseen, and without committing to anything, Brian Johnson becomes a strong candidate for that spot,” manager John Farrell said.

Johnson has pitched well in Triple-A, carrying a 2.82 ERA through seven start. On Saturday, he allowed just two runs through 7 2/3 innings, solidifying his status as the next in line for a promotion.

In one big league spot start earlier this season, Johnson allowed four runs on three walks and two homers, but that was better than Velazquez, who made his big league debut with six runs on nine hits Thursday in Oakland.
