Knee injury sends Benintendi to disabled list

ST. PETERSBURG -- Red Sox rookie outfielder Andrew Benintendi, who was helped off the field after spraining his left knee while being tagged out near second base in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 4-3, 11-inning loss to the Rays, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday, said manager John Farrell.

To replace Benintendi on the roster, the Red Sox called up infielder Marco Hernandez from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Benintendi underwent an MRI on Thursday, but the club is still awaiting the results. While it's too early to tell if Benintendi's injury is season-ending, Farrell said he was "choosing to remain optimistic.
