As it looks now, the Boston Celtics will be minus superstar Rajon Rondo heading into next month's season opener.

Per Baxter Holmes of the Boston Globe, the Celtics guard broke his left hand on Friday:

Despite Holmes' initial report of no current timetable for his return, the Celtics issued a statement indicating they expect him to be back on the court withing six-to-eight weeks.

The Celtics also indicated that the broken hand was the result of a fall at Rondo's home on Thursday night. Per ESPN.com news services, a source told ESPN's Jeff Goodman that Rondo slipped in the shower and broke a bone in the back of his hand.

With Rondo out, Celtics first-round draft pick Marcus Smart will get time in training camp at point guard.
