Celtics Rumors: Celtics express interest in free agent PG Isaiah Thomas, Rondo's future?

In a look into today's Celtics rumors surrounding the very beginning of the 2014 NBA free agency period, the Boston Celtics are interested in Sacramento Kings free agent PG Isaiah Thomas - drawing speculation as to the team's intent with incumbent starter Rajon Rondo.

Here's ESPN's Brian Windhorst with the very latest:

As Isaiah Thomas is currently a restricted free agent, the Sacramento Kings can match any offer thrown his way - perhaps putting talks back on the table between the Kings and Celtics for a potential sign-and-trade regarding Thomas.

What this says about Rondo's future is still unclear. Rondo recently expressed his desire for a $100 million extension - an extension the Celtics can't provide until during the 2015 offseason when he hits unrestricted free agency.

Thomas averaged a career-high 20.3 points and 6.3 assists last season, and his price tag is said to be manageable - the Pistons reportedly are pacing the field with a potential three-year, $24 million deal.

The Celtics could very well be looking to use Thomas as a buffer for Rondo, or in a dual guard set, but at this point nothing is truly clear surrounding the team or their future intentions with Rondo.

If this is what they're looking for, Aaron Bruski of Pro Basketball Talk is reporting that the Celtics will have to contend with the Pistons, Heat, Suns, Mavericks, and Lakers (providing the Kings don't match an accepted offer).

Chat Sports will have more on this story, and the Celtics' entire foray into this year's open market, as additional information is made available.
