Celtics Rumors: 3 Free Agents Boston Should Pursue Are...

The Boston Celtics are going through a big rebuilding process, but even after trading away Rajon Rondo and Jeff Green, they clinched a playoff spot. With two first round picks in this year’s NBA Draft and a bunch of cap space, Boston’s future looks bright – and it could be even brighter if they can bring a quality free agent or two into the mix. Here are their top targets this offseason:

DeAndre Jordan, C, Los Angeles Clippers

Jordan enjoys playing for the Clippers, but they might not be willing to offer him the money that’s necessary to keep him in Los Angeles. Boston has the cap space to give him close to max deal if they so choose, and while that may seem like an overpay, Jordan would greatly improve this team. He’s an elite rebounder and shot-blocker, automatically giving the Celtics the defensive punch down low they desperately need. A more prominent role would be very appealing to Jordan, and Boston can offer him that.

PF/C Greg Monroe, Detroit Pistons

Monroe hasn’t wanted to commit to Detroit long-term, and he’ll be looking elsewhere in free agency. Several teams were connected to the Pistons center in sign-and-trade talks last year and trade rumors once again this year, and his evolving offensive arsenal and bruising work in the low post would be a perfect building block to work with going forward. Monroe isn’t a max player and would save teams some money while still getting a really productive big man.

Monroe is rumored to be deciding between the Knicks and Celtics, and with Boston's success this season, they are the more appealing option for immediate success - and appear to have to upper hand.

Wesley Matthews, SG, Portland Trail Blazers

Matthews is one of the best two-way shooting guards in the league and is due for a big pay day. He’s another guy who will demand a little less than the max (especially after he suffered a torn ACL this season), but for the Celtics, he could be worth every penny of it. Matthews led the NBA in three-pointers made before he got hurt, giving the Celtics a premier threat from the outside. His defensive prowess, coupled with Marcus Smart or Avery Bradley on the court, would make Boston one of the best perimeter defending teams in the league.
