Battle to be Wisconsin's backup QB job rages through spring game

MADISON, Wis. -- Let's start here: Wisconsin's spring football game Friday night wasn't as much a game as it was a developmental practice with referees. Nearly all of the team's starters watched a one-hour scrimmage from the sideline, which left unfamiliar combinations of players on the field. Throw in a convoluted scoring system that awarded points for 20-yard plays or three-and-out defensive stops, and the evening hardly resembled what we'll see when the Badgers open the season in four months.

Still, competition existed between the whistles. And the most intriguing battle that played out featured Wisconsin's two backup quarterbacks -- neither of whom has played a down in a college game.
