The Baltimore Ravens lost to the New England Patriots in heartbreaking fashion during the playoffs, and will be looking to sure up their roster to try and get back to the Super Bowl next year. What players are they targeting in the first round of this year’s draft to help them get over the hump?
RB Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin
Baltimore needs to find a long-term solution at the running back position with Justin Forsett turning 30 years old soon, and Gordon is their guy. He produced and produced and produced some more during his time at Wisconsin, and his ability to maintain top speed on his cuts both inside and outside means that his game projects well in the high-octane NFL. He’s also got very long legs, and can cover major ground with just a few steps — turning two yard gains into three-and-a-half or four-yard pickups.
DT Arik Armstead, Oregon
Baltimore needs to find a replacement for Haloti Ngata in the middle of their defensive line, and Armstead is their best bet late in the first round. He’s a physical menace at 6’7″ and 292 lbs., yet he’s still extremely quick for his position. He uses his size to locate the ball quickly, and then uses his length and quickness to shed blockers and attack the ball carrier. Armstead hasn’t shown a great deal of anticipation on the field, but his elite athleticism usually makes up for it.
OL Laken Tomlinson, Duke
Baltimore needs to find some depth on the offensive line as their current players age in order to maintain their run-first offensive style, as well as to protect Joe Flacco. Tomlinson would fit in as a skilled, intelligent player who should be able to start right away as a rookie and have a long career.
