Avila, Smith start fast in Ball State's fall camp

MUNCIE — Even in Ball State’s first fall practice last week, local volleyball products Hannah Smith and Kate Avila stood out.

The footwork, drive, technique. Take your pick, they’ve got it all.

“It’s exactly what I expected them to do from their Munciana culture, what they have from Wapahani and Yorktown culture,” said first-year head coach Kelli Miller. “They brought that to the gym, and that’s part of why we brought them in.

“They know how to win.”

Smith won a Class 2A state title last season with Wapahani, while Avila advanced to the 3A state title match with Yorktown before falling to Providence.
